Agi Keramidas: Music. Welcome to personal development mastery
00:00:05
podcast, and this is another snippet of wisdom where I select
00:00:09
my favorite, most insightful moments from previous episodes.
00:00:13
Today's snippet is from my conversation with Jamie fair,
00:00:17
who is a speaker, author coach and a good friend of mine, it is
00:00:23
about creating lasting motivation, and I trust that you
00:00:29
will find it insightful. Those
00:00:34
Jamie Fair: obstacles that come up that you mentioned, which
00:00:35
always come up, I think they are intentional. They are part of
00:00:40
the journey, and they are opportunities for us to grow. So
00:00:45
those obstacles are there for a reason. They're not to get in
00:00:47
our way. They're not to stop us.
00:00:47
They're to cause us to grow and change, to reach that, you know,
00:00:51
that thing that we're searching for, that we're going after. So
00:00:55
I don't think motivation just happens. Many of us are, we're
00:00:59
waiting for that day when we feel motivated to go after our
00:01:03
dream or to go after what we want, and I don't believe that's
00:01:06
going to happen ever. Motivation doesn't just suddenly come upon
00:01:10
you one day. It's possible, sure, but I think we need to
00:01:12
create motivation. So if you'll excuse the brief plug i co
00:01:17
authored a book called A journey of riches motivates your life.
00:01:21
And in there, I wrote a chapter called Creating Lasting
00:01:24
motivation that you brought up.
00:01:27
And it is all about how you create motivation. And it starts
00:01:31
with having one of those dreams, having something that scares you
00:01:36
a little bit, particularly those are those the best dreams,
00:01:38
right? The ones like, ooh, that's scary to think about.
00:01:42
That's how we start to create motivation, is by having a dream
00:01:46
and then having the willingness to go after it, even though it's
00:01:49
scary, probably outside of our comfort zone, and even though we
00:01:53
know those obstacles are coming in that chapter, I'll talk about
00:01:57
the three big detractors that happen when we decide to create
00:02:01
motivation now, it's like overwhelm, self criticism, and
00:02:05
of course, fear. You know, fear is a big one. That's what gets
00:02:08
in our way a lot. And personally, I think that fears
00:02:13
are meant to be pushed on almost always, if there's something
00:02:18
that you want, but it's scary, then on the other side of that
00:02:21
fear is something amazing for you, and in my life, it was
00:02:25
public speaking. I was utterly terrified of public speaking. I
00:02:29
would have rather died than done public speaking or a podcast
00:02:32
like today, for instance, like it was one of my two greatest
00:02:36
fears in my life, heights and public speaking. And yet life
00:02:41
began to happen. All these events started, you know,
00:02:44
happening to me, where I was required to do speaking
00:02:48
engagements. Over and over speaking events. I remember a
00:02:51
big one for me was I had started my job in leadership, and there
00:02:56
was a company meeting, and we were all listening to a couple
00:02:58
speakers, and out of the blue, someone said, Hey, Jamie, will
00:03:01
you come talk about that thing that's happening in your in your
00:03:03
department? And I had never spoken in front of a group
00:03:07
outside of my little meetings with my own team, which were
00:03:09
scary enough, and I had to get past them, right? This is that,
00:03:12
that growth thing, it starts that small, and it gets bigger
00:03:14
and bigger and bigger and bigger and and I got up in front of all
00:03:18
these people from this company, and I just completely locked up.
00:03:23
I remember just like I couldn't the words would not come out. I
00:03:26
was so scared, and people started to get a little
00:03:30
restless, because I couldn't say anything. And I realized, like I
00:03:34
have two choices. I can go sit back down and be completely
00:03:37
embarrassed for who knows how long, or I can find some way
00:03:42
through this. And in that moment, I pushed hard, and I
00:03:48
forced myself to speak, and once I got going, I was great. I was
00:03:52
funny. People were laughing, but I had to get past that initial
00:03:56
fear first. And over and over, things like that happened. You
00:04:01
know, I've worked my way up to doing podcasts and and then live
00:04:05
podcasts, and then some live videos. But it just keeps
00:04:08
escalating in my life, regardless of where I am in my
00:04:10
life, it just keeps escalating.
00:04:10
And don't think for a moment that it doesn't terrify me,
00:04:13
because it does. I don't sleep the nights before I stay up. You
00:04:16
know, I get sweaty during these every time, but I just don't let
00:04:21
it stop me, because what I discovered was on the other side
00:04:25
of that fear is a love of public speaking, a love of sharing
00:04:29
these messages that I have, of these experiences that I had,
00:04:32
and how I can help others in their lives. So I really want to
00:04:35
encourage people to whatever it is, whatever your fear is to not
00:04:39
let it just sit there. It's never going to change, as long
00:04:43
as you don't do anything about it. So I call it, you know,
00:04:45
wearing away at your fear, eroding on that wall of fear for
00:04:49
heights, for me, for instance, I will take opportunities to go do
00:04:55
things that are well outside of my comfort zone. I'll tell
00:04:58
another story. Some. Time, we have more time. But, yeah, push
00:05:00
yourself. Just keep pushing. Not a lot. You don't have to do it a
00:05:04
lot, but a little bit all the time. Wear that wall down.
00:05:06
Eventually it will be so low you can just walk over it like
00:05:09
public speaking is for me, and you'll find on the other side is
00:05:12
something beautiful and something you're probably
00:05:15
passionate about, and that's why that fear existed in the first
00:05:17
place. You music. Thank
00:05:23
